TRANO FANANTENANA

The Hope House, transforming the Caravan House into a Hospitality Training Hub

By repurposing the caravan house without changing its purpose to live the simplicity of Africa, we aim to address the hospitality workers gap and empower young individuals with valuable skills that align with the growing tourism industry.

About Trano Fanantenana

Madagascar and Mozambique, two countries facing numerous challenges, offer limited opportunities for their youth. Fraternity Without Borders recognizes the potential within the tourism industry as a viable avenue for empowerment. Madagascar’s picturesque landscapes and unique culture, along with Mozambique’s stunning coastal areas and diverse cultural heritage, provide strong foundations for tourism. However, due to socio-economic challenges, many youths in both countries lack the skills and opportunities to tap into this potential.

In Mozambique, the tourism industry holds significant promise, particularly with its pristine beaches, wildlife reserves, and vibrant cultural traditions. However, challenges such as limited infrastructure, political instability, and poverty hinder the full realization of this potential. Many young people struggle to access quality education and training opportunities, limiting their ability to participate in and benefit from the tourism sector.

This project aims to transform existing dormitories into dynamic training centers and leverage kitchen/dining areas for practical skills development, creating pathways for 16–20-yearolds to thrive in the hospitality sector in both Madagascar and Mozambique. By elevating the purpose of these spaces from simple accommodations to workshops for skills practice and development, we aim to address the gap in skills and empower young individuals with valuable capabilities that align with the growing tourism industry in both countries.

The primary objectives of this initiative are:

  • To equip young individuals with practical skills and knowledge that align with the demands of the tourism industry.

  • To provide an opportunity for skill development that can potentially lead to sustainable employment or entrepreneurial ventures.

  • To transform the existing facilities into a fully functional hotel and restaurant, thereby generating income to sustain the program and support the local community.

To train the youth, we will leverage local knowledge and volunteer overseas. Training will be provided in 3 formats:

1. Online Modules: Curriculum focusing on hotel management, housekeeping, customer service, and front desk operations; and training in cooking techniques, menu planning based on available food, food safety, and restaurant management.

2. Soft Skills Development: Workshops on communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and professionalism to enhance overall employability during caravans.

3. Practical Experience: Hands-on learning opportunities within the transformed caravan house to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings during caravans.

Our project fosters an inclusive environment where participants, regardless of background or circumstance, are warmly welcomed and treated with dignity. Through hospitality training, we instill values of respect and inclusivity, creating a fraternity that embraces diversity and encourages mutual understanding among individuals from varied cultural and religious backgrounds.

The project celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of Africa. By respecting and appreciating the diverse cultural and religious practices of our participants, we not only acknowledge their identities but also create an environment where different beliefs and traditions are valued. This appreciation contributes to a more harmonious and understanding community within the training hub and beyond.

In implementing the Hospitality Training Hub, we strive for sustainable processes that not only impart skills but also ensure the longevity and success of the program. By maintaining high standards and continuous improvement, we aim to empower participants to become skilled professionals capable of contributing positively to the local tourism industry.

The implementation of the project will go through a journey that starts with engaging volunteers and organizations interested in participating in the deployment of the trainings, fundings to implement changes to the caravan house building, and caravans to enable some inperson workshop.

a. Renovation and Redesign: Convert the caravan house into a functional hotel with dormstyle rooms, communal areas, and reception.

b. Kitchen Transformation: Revamp the existing dining area into a professional restaurant setting, equipped with necessary supplies.

c. Collaborations: Partnership between local teams with chefs and hospitality professionals’ volunteers to facilitate training sessions and mentorship programs.

d. Curriculum Development: Create a comprehensive curriculum integrating theoretical learning with practical application within the caravan house.

This project will be fully funded by donations and leveraging existing resources. Campaigns to raise fundings for any proposed renovation will be managed by volunteers interested in participating in the project implementation.

Although the project aims to teach new skills to local people, the experience during the caravan of simplicity and equality will be preserved. It is not the objective of this project to bring any type of sophistication to the caravan house or perception that the students are there to please the volunteers.

Fraternity Without Borders believes that transforming the caravan house into a hospitality training hub not only addresses the challenges faced by the youth in Africa but also contributes to the growth of the local tourism industry. By providing practical skills, fostering partnerships, and creating a supportive learning environment, this project aims to empower young individuals to break the cycle of poverty and build a sustainable future for themselves and their communities. Through education and skill development, we aspire to create a ripple effect that positively impacts the lives of many, fostering a brighter future for Africa.
